The name Numbers is derived from the two major censuses Moses took of the Israelites, once at Mount Sinai before their departure, and secondly in Moab, east of the Jordan, about a full generation later. In the period between theses two censuses the Israelites went to Kadesh Barnea on the southern border of Canaan, but failed to enter the promised land from there out of fear and disobedience to God. As a result, they spent many years wandering in the desert areas before finally arriving in the region east of the Jordan River, where part of the people settle, and where the rest prepared to cross the river into Canaan. The overall message of the Book of Numbers gives us a picture of God's people who were often discouraged and afraid in the face of hardship and difficulty. As a result of this, they rebelled against God, and against Moses, the man whom God appointed to lead them out of captivity in Egypt and into the promised land of Canaan. Despite all of this, God remains faithful to His people, even though they are weak and disobedient. And Moses, God's representative, remains faithful to God, even though he sometimes displays impatience towards the people he is called to lead.
