Joining a partnership or promoting an employee to partner means understanding what the objective is. Because it's often not clear. Why would you promote someone to partner? In addition to establishing the reasons, you need to establish the criteria. I really like to use this phrase: today's solutions can be tomorrow's problems. I see a lot of businessmen saying: I have an employee in the company who is good, but if I give him the partnership, he will work as an owner. I think that is magical thinking. I tend to believe that the guy first works as an owner and then he becomes an owner. When I promoted Rogério, who is now my partner at Lumma Despachante, I analyzed some things that led to my promotion. Rogério started working with me when he was 17 and already said that he was going to be the Vice President of Lumma. But it wasn't because he said that (which is still important), but he acted like an owner. For Rogério, there was never a bad time. He acted like the owner of the company. After you analyze the behavior, then come the criteria. And this varies from company to company. You can define how it will be done through the agreement contracts. There are companies where future partners pay to have part of the company. Or you can demand a certain result from this employee and as soon as he achieves it, he becomes a partner.
