Vijaydashami, Visarjan & Sindur Khela in Kolkata with NEXT LEVEL local BENGALI Special FOOD
Dashami carries a profound significance for Bengalis celebrating Durga Puja as it marks the departure of their beloved goddess to her heavenly abode. Today's episode beautifully captures the bittersweet emotions, the unique traditions like Sindur Khela and the scenes from the immersion as experienced by us at Bagbazar Sarbojanin and Jorashanko Shib Krishna Daw Bari Durga Puja. We first visited Bagbazar Sarbojanin Durga Puja to witness sindoor khela ceremony, a cherished tradition on Vijaydashmi. It symbolizes the strength of womanhood in safeguarding her family from all adversities. Married women, adorned in elegant Bengali white sarees with red borders apply vermilion to the goddess Durga's foreheads and to each other. After Bagbazar, we had the privilege to witness this vibrant ceremony at the legendary Shib Krishna Daw Bari Durga Puja. The family had gathered for the sindoor khela ceremony. Many visitors too were present to witness the spectacle. The ladies of the house were adorned with ornate saris applied vermilion to the Goddess and them amongst themselves. As the Sindur Khela concluded, the courtyard erupted in euphoric dance to the rhythmic beats of the dhaak. Following this jubilant celebration, we indulged in a hearty feast together, gathered around long tables adorned with an array of delectable dishes, including rice, dal, fish curry, chutney, shukto and papad. Later in the afternoon, the time for Goddess Durga's immersion arrived, evoking a profound sense of sorrow among all attendees. With heavy heart, a tearful farewell was bid to the deity. This marked the conclusion of our Kolkata Durga Puja. However, amidst the lingering melancholy, the collective hope of welcoming Goddess Durga again next year acted as a comforting solace for everyone present.
