Inside the Lachlan Valley Railway | Cowra Railway Museum

Over 50 years of railway preservation — and it all leads back to Cowra. In this video, I visit the Lachlan Valley Railway’s historic base at the Cowra Railway Museum in Central West New South Wales. Founded in 1974, the Lachlan Valley Railway has grown into one of NSW’s most active heritage rail operators, running mainline steam and diesel tours across the state. We explore the 1923-built Cowra roundhouse, look at locomotives including D16 Class D9 and Planet 52, and take a close look at one of the most unique pieces of NSW rollingstock — HTV2000, the Heavy Test Vehicle converted from a 47 Class locomotive. I also cover the history of the Cowra–Blayney line, the challenges faced when the line closed in 2009, and how LVR continues to operate heritage tours today from its current base in Orange. If you’ve visited Cowra or travelled on an LVR tour, let me know in the comments. Filmed in Cowra, New South Wales.
