Is Fernando Ortiz a good coach? Or is Colo-Colo in first place because they had the easiest part of the season? That question seems simple. It isn't. Evaluating a soccer coach is one of the most repeated and least resolved debates anywhere in the world, especially in Chile. Everyone has an opinion, but almost no one has a set of criteria. In this video, I propose one using data provided by the Chilean league. Jeremy Lin, a former NBA player, commented on ESPN that players themselves evaluate their coaches based on ATO—After Time Out. This refers to what the team achieves immediately after the coach draws a play on the whiteboard during that one-minute break: if your team scores more points after that time, it means the coach knows how to read the game and find solutions in real time. What happens if we apply that criterion to soccer? The closest thing to a timeout is halftime. And the question becomes: how many points does a coach manage to accumulate in matches where their team wasn't winning at halftime?
