The Central Bank of Russia is saying goodbye to Crimea: life in Crimea falls apart

The Central Bank of Russia put an updated 100-ruble banknote into circulation, dedicated to the Central Federal District. The front of the note features a section of the Kremlin’s Spasskaya Tower with its chimes and the coat of arms, while the reverse side depicts the Rzhev Memorial, according to Russian media reports, as noted by “Zerkalo Nedeli. Ukraine”. However, the main difference in the new banknote that has piqued Ukrainians’ interest is the absence of the temporarily occupied Crimea. Although on the 2022-model banknote, behind the monument and the cranes, the Russians depicted a map of the Russian Federation in which the peninsula was part of Russia, this is absent from the updated banknote—it now features a map of the Central Federal District. Blogger Dmitry Chernyshev drew attention to this. “Please play the song ‘We Left Crimea’ for the Central Bank’s leadership,” he wrote. Residents across Crimea are sharing what daily life has become like as power outages, water shortages and fuel problems continue to disrupt everyday routines. In this video, we compile local footage and firsthand accounts from people describing the challenges they face, with some saying they have decided to leave the peninsula. Many residents talk about frequent blackouts, interruptions to water supplies, fuel shortages, internet disruptions and growing uncertainty about the future. Others explain how these problems affect their jobs, businesses and daily lives, making even basic tasks increasingly difficult. This video brings together local reports and personal experiences to provide a closer look at conditions on the ground through the voices of the people living there. If you’re interested in understanding how residents describe the current situation in Crimea beyond the headlines, this compilation offers valuable insight into what they are experiencing. Since May, Ukrainian forces have launched systematic strikes on roads and bridges connecting the peninsula to Russia, as well as on Russian infrastructure and military installations. The attacks have caused power and water outages, fuel shortages and a wave of panic among tourists and residents. In just a few months, Ukraine has turned Crimea – the Russians' beloved Riviera, known for its stunning landscapes and tranquil beaches – into a battlefield. Explosions, air raid sirens, endless lines at gas stations, electricity blackouts and oil slicks along the coast have all become part of daily life for vacationers. Crimeans, some in tears, shocked or outraged, record themselves sharing their distress on social media. "I am speaking to Moscow and to Putin on behalf of the people of Crimea," a young woman said from behind the wheel of her car in a video. "You promised us security and a normal life. But in reality, there are empty gas stations, fear, checkpoints, long lines and total uncertainty. On television, they say everything is under control. But if Crimea is in survival mode, then things are already no longer under control. Why have you abandoned us?"
