I Bought an original MK1 Ford Ka

I’ve bought a MK1 Ford KA! A design icon that once littered the streets of England, spreading its totally radical styling from one end of the housing estate to the other. And this one is quite special, it’s an elusive “P-reg” meaning it’s of the first year of production. Built in 1996 (although registered in early ‘97) this example is believed to be the 3rd oldest on our roads. A miracle it has survived then considering just how disposable they were considered and how quickly they disintegrated at the mere thought of a salt spreader. Which is exactly why I have bought one, a preservation project to appreciate the genius of Ford’s A-segment in the 90s. It is undoubtedly whacky, but under that narcotic-fuelled exterior hides some sense: it was playful, entertaining and yet strangely a hit with the ladies (go watch the in-period Top Gear review). The Ka was one of the safest cars in its segment and yet still came in at considerably under book price of its bigger brother, the Fiesta. How could it not be a financial success? Interestingly I am asking myself the same question in 2026: surely this is a worthwhile investment for what is the genesis of modern small cars? At just 57,000 miles and a pleasant lack of brown bits on the bodywork there is only one way values of early, prefix reg KAs can go. Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/raceometer....
