Most post-growth theorists and degrowth advocates have a problem: No matter how noble and good their intentions may be—yes, climate catastrophe is the challenge of our time!—the concepts for a different, climate-neutral economy are unfortunately extremely ill-conceived. In any case, one is unlikely to be taken seriously if one paints a picture of a paradise on earth in flowery language, draws a very simplified picture of capitalism, and, above all, aims to demonstrate that people only need to change their consciousness to transform the world. Class conflicts are as rare in these theories as a modern understanding of money. Sustainability researcher Tim Jackson is no exception: He randomly refers to Milton Friedman, Stephanie Kelton, Buddha, or poetic quips, not to offer a coherent analysis, but, it seems, merely to edify his readership. Jackson promises prosperity without growth, but unfortunately, even after reading more than 600 pages, we still don't know how that's supposed to work.
