Welcome to the Biology concept channel. Tapetum is the innermost layer of the anther wall that surrounds the developing microspore mother cells and pollen grains. It is a nutritive tissue that plays a vital role in pollen development. Tapetal cells are usually large, rich in cytoplasm, and may become multinucleate. They provide nourishment, enzymes, proteins, and precursors required for pollen wall formation and maturation. Types of Tapetum: Glandular (Secretory) Tapetum – The tapetal cells remain in their original position and secrete nutrients and substances needed for pollen development. This is the most common type. Amoeboid (Periplasmodial) Tapetum – The tapetal cell walls break down, and the protoplasts fuse to form a plasmodial mass that surrounds the developing pollen grains. Functions of Tapetum: Provides nutrition to developing microspores and pollen grains. Produces enzymes such as callase for separation of microspores. Supplies materials for the formation of the pollen wall (exine). Synthesizes proteins, lipids, and sporopollenin precursors. Contributes to pollen maturation and viability.
