Most of the monuments are classified as historical monuments. Entrevaux is a spectacular medieval town known for its military history and picturesque landscapes in the south-east of France. Here are some of the most important information about this place: Geographical position: Entrevaux is located in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, between the river Var and the Alpes-Maritimes mountains, offering stunning views and a natural defense access. The distances are accessible: about 90 km from Nice and 30 km from Digne-les - Baths. Fortified by Vauban, Louis XIV's famous military engineer, Entrevaux was transformed into an essential defensive fortress designed to protect France's borders in the 17th century. The citadel sits on a cliff above the town and can be accessed via a zigzag fortified road, offering incredible panoramas. Medieval History: Its origin dates back to the Roman period, and the city was an important fortress during the Middle Ages. It had a strategic role in the defense of French territory against invasions from Italy, being located close to the border. Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption Cathedral: Built in the 17th century, this baroque cathedral is an architectural gem, renowned for its rich interior decorations and imposing facade. Medieval bridge and fortified gates: The old town is accessible via a fortified medieval single-arch bridge that crosses the river Var. This bridge is one of the most photographed structures in the city and a symbol of its medieval heritage. Entrevaux was, in the past, important enough to mint its own currency, reflecting its independence and prosperity at the time. The town is on the train route from Nice to Digne-les-Bains, a scenic railway route that attracts tourists from all over the world. The line is famous for the spectacular landscapes it crosses. Medieval festivals: Entrevaux regularly hosts medieval events and festivals, where residents and visitors dress up in period costumes, recreating the atmosphere and lifestyle of the Middle Ages. Tourist accessibility: Although small, Entrevaux is well connected by train and mountain roads and offers an authentic sightseeing experience. In addition to the citadel and cathedral, tourists can stroll through its cobbled streets and explore the well-preserved medieval atmosphere. Nearby attractions: Around the town, tourists can explore the natural landscapes of the Alpes-Maritimes, the Var River and other picturesque villages, making Entrevaux an ideal destination for mountain excursions and cultural tours. Entrevaux is a rare combination of history, fortified architecture and natural beauty, making it an ideal destination for history and adventure lovers in the heart of the French Alps. Although a small town, Entrevaux has its own cathedral, Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption, built in the Baroque style. It is one of the smallest cathedrals in France, but extremely well preserved and richly decorated. Entrevaux is a rare combination of history, fortified architecture and natural beauty, making it an ideal destination for history and adventure lovers in the heart of the French Alps. #entrevaux #france #travel #provence #frenchvillage #medieval #beautiful
