Varens groeien goed op de oude zeebodem van de Zuiderzee | TV | Vroege Vogels

The Kuinderbos forest is one of the most fern-rich areas in the Netherlands. More than thirty species have been discovered in this young forest in recent decades. And that's quite remarkable, especially for such a newly established forest. It all appears to be related to the unique forest soil. Nina Bos is compiling a fern guide. Forest ranger Florian Bijmold shows which species occur here. Of the 37 known ferns in the Netherlands, 32 have already been discovered here. This is because the conditions are ideal. The forest was created on the old Zuiderzee beach, where countless shells washed ashore. This made the soil very calcareous. Furthermore, to create the forest, they dug numerous ditches. These ditches provide a good place for many ferns to attach themselves. These ferns then come from all over. You might not realize it, but the air is filled with all sorts of minuscule particles, including fern spores. These spores can be blown all the way from England or the Alps across the Netherlands. Here in the Netherlands, few places naturally offer such favorable conditions, especially in the calcareous province of Limburg. Ferns often thrive in cities, on walls with calcareous mortar. Here in the Kuinderbos forest, ferns pop up between ditches and on the forest floor. The tongue fern, for example, grows here on the ground among fallen trees. It is the largest population of tongue ferns in Europe. It owes its name to its tongue-shaped fronds. Many other ferns are lobed, but here the edge is completely smooth. The spores are under the fronds in the form of stripes. Another interesting species is the spear fern. The first one in the Netherlands was discovered in the Kuinderbos forest, and it remains one of the few places where it grows. It is an Alpine species, so it also grows on rocks in other places in Europe. But here it is in a ditch in the forest. More videos on Zelf Geschoten: https://www.bnnvara.nl/vroegevogels/z...
