In 2022, a couple in Jackson County, Oregon, was ordered to tear out their wood heater. It had been professionally engineered. It had been independently tested. Its emissions measured 0.12 grams per hour, twenty times cleaner than the EPA limit for certified wood stoves. None of that mattered. The hearing officer told them compliance is determined by listing status, not actual emissions. They dismantled it for $4,200 and were forced to install a $9,800 certified boiler that burns more wood and pollutes more. The device they destroyed was a rocket mass heater. It burns 90 percent less wood than a conventional fireplace. It radiates heat for 48 hours after the fire goes out. It costs $500 in materials to build.
