Beaches, parties, resorts, sunburned and drunk Brits; that's what people usually think of when they hear "Cyprus"—another Mediterranean island, with sun, tranquility, and no complex geopolitical problems with large-scale international implications. But they're wrong. They're unaware that just a few kilometers from where they plant their beach umbrellas lies a long exclusion zone that divides the island into two countries so different they seem irreconcilable. It may surprise you, but there is still a country in Europe split in two, families and friends separated by a demilitarized zone, guarded by the UN and the result of a destructive war; entire cities abandoned; thousands displaced. A wall cuts its capital, Nicosia, in half: on one side, Europe, Orthodox churches, Greek language and culture; on the other, imposing mosques, bazaars, and narrow streets, Turkish is spoken, and even its currency is used. The clash between East and West on a small island. In this video, we'll explore what has led Cyprus to this peculiar situation, cross the Green Line to see the differences between the south and the north, explore Varosha—the world's largest abandoned city—and tour Nicosia, Europe's last divided capital.
