A vertical garden is a feast for the eyes. Lots of foliage together, forming a green wall, is a dream for plant lovers. But have you ever thought about what happens behind all those plants on the wall? Our gardener Carol Costa shows the "behind the scenes" and the structure of a well-planned vertical garden. We see a mass of green, as if a forest created a wall, but there's much more to a vertical garden than meets the eye. Of course, if the project was well executed. For that, our plant enthusiast has outlined three fundamental points so you can create a vertical garden that brings joy and no headaches. Humidity is essential for the plants in a vertical garden to grow well, since most species are tropical. Even those that "like less" water still need the precious liquid. And this can be a big problem for your wall. The first tip is to protect the area where the structure will be mounted, and for that, a good waterproofing agent will do the trick. In Carol's project, Neutrol was used, a product that's easy to find in paint stores and home centers. This waterproofing agent has the advantage of being a very dark shade, practically black. This creates a feeling of fullness when the plants are on the wall, acting as a shadow and adding depth. If you don't want to use this product, there are still tips to help your plants happily climb the walls... Secret #1: Wooden structure – one way to keep the plants from sticking too tightly to the wall is to fix them to a structure. Carol used varnished pine beams in her project. With this material, a wooden rectangle was created, and with large screws and appropriate wall plugs, this structure was fixed to the wall. Ensure the fixing is good, as a lot of weight will be placed there: many pots, substrate, plants, and water! Secret #2: Plastic sheeting – to ensure that the minimum amount of water touches the wall, a plastic sheet is stretched over the wooden structure and fixed with staples. Choose a black tarp to achieve the same shading effect as the waterproofing. With the spacing from the wall provided by the rafters and the tarp, the moisture will have to find a way to reach the wall! Secret #3: Metal mesh – a mesh works incredibly well for securing the pots! It allows you to choose the position with much greater precision, giving space for plants of different sizes and also allowing the pots and hanging baskets to be secured with nylon cable ties. That's practicality! Choose a metal mesh, preferably with an automotive paint finish. Since it will be in direct contact with the pots, without this treatment the metal can oxidize very quickly. You can find this mesh in home centers – Carol always finds this mesh for her vertical panel projects at Leroy Merlin. Another option is to order such a mesh from a metalworker. Want to make a larger vertical panel? No problem... the mesh Carol uses is 1m x 1.2m, but if you need to fill a larger wall, just place the modules side by side.
