West Winds Estate Newtownards Streets Named After WW2 Era Planes
I am fascinated at the history/logic behind the naming of many of our Belfast and beyond street names. Many of our streets are named after the old Irish names for hill, rocky place, castle, river, townland or church etc. In other instances many of our streets are named after people who have made their mark on local, regional, or national history. I'm thinking of military leaders, medical people, politicians, churchmen, inventors and the like. Many our streets are named after battles in the Crimean war and WW1 and WW2. In my street name investications so far, I have discovered that streets in Cregagh Estate East Belfast are mostly named after rivers in Northern Ireland. Many streets on the Cregagh Road East Belfast are named after battles and military leaders from WW1 and WW2. Knowing my interest in Belfast street names, my Youtube friend Andy, alerted me to the fact that all of the streets in West Winds Estate Newtownards, are named after 16 WW2 era aeroplanes. 12 of these aeroplanes fought in WW2 theatres of war. Others were developped soon after WW2. These streets being named after WW2 era planes is very appropriate because right across the Comber Road, -just opposite the estate lies Newtownards Airport ( Ulster Flying Club ). The airfield here was the base of 231 squadron of Westland Lysanders ( Single-engined liaison monoplane ). These were joined in 1943 by some Curtiss Tomahawk and a squadron of North American Mustangs. (Both these planes were Single-engined fighters ) The airfield was bombed during the Belfast Blitz on 15th April 1941. 13 soldiers from the Royal Enniskillen Fusiliers manning the base were killed in the German Luftwaffe raid. There were many more casualties. West Winds Estate, streets, avenues, drives, park, etc named after WW2 era aeroplanes. Blenheim was a WW2 RAF Blenheim bomber. ( 2 engines ) Lancaster was a WW2 RAF heavy bomber. ( 4 engines ) Canberra was a RAF fast high flying bomber. Auster was a RAF WW2 liason/obseravtion aeroplane. Valetta was a RAF Military transport aeroplane. Lysander was a WW2 RAF often tasked with undertaking undercover clandestine opertions into German occupied France involving alleid agents. Dakota ( Skytrain ) was WW2 USAF military troop transporter aircraft. Shackleton was RAF long range maritime patrol aircraft. Sunderland was a WW2 RAF Flying Boat made by Shorts Bros Belfast. Bristol was a RAF WW1 bi-plane fighter. Stirling was a RAF WW2 heavy bomber made by Shorts Bros Belfast. Halifax was a RAF WW2 heavy bomber. Anson was a RAF WW2 aircrew trainer and spotter aircraft. Hampden was a RAF WW2 medium bomber. Beaufort was a RAF WW2 Twin engined torpedo bomber/fighter. Catalina was a WW2 USAF Flying Boat.
