What should you do when you fire up a backing track and you don't know the key, you don't know the scales and you don't have any licks to play? I am here to tell you that you only need two scales and probably you already know them. There are two worlds in music: major and minor. And what determines if something is major or minor is the third interval. If the third is major, your chords and scales will be major and if the third is minor your chords and scales will be minor. In this lesson, we are going to focus on the chords. The very first chord we are going to use is a three-note chord (commonly known as a triad). In this case, we have a major chord because the third is major. If we want to transform a major chord into a minor chord, we need to lower the third by half step so we have a minor third interval. When you hear a chord progression you can start singing the master shape scale we learned on the first lesson. In this way, you can find out if the third on the chord is major or minor. Now, if you can recognize the first chord in the progression you can move on to find which scale to use. The to-go scale we are going to use is the pentatonic scale. Within the pentatonic scale, we have five notes or intervals that are very stable and safe. If you heard major in the first chord you should use the major pentatonic scale. If you heard a minor chord you should use the minor pentatonic scale. One important exception to this "rule" happens in the blues. The blues makes extensive use of the minor third interval over a major chord.
