Ambarawa's Unique Railway Line & Its Historic Steam Trains! The Ambarawa - Bedono line holds several unique characteristics that you might not find on typical active railway lines on Java Island. The Ambarawa Railway Museum (ABR) is a former Class I railway station that has now been converted into a museum, making it Indonesia's first railway museum. This museum houses a collection of trains that once dominated the railway scene in their heyday. Administratively, the museum is located in Panjang Village, Ambarawa District, Semarang Regency, Central Java. Situated at an elevation of +474.40 meters above sea level, this museum falls under Operational Area IV Semarang and is managed by the Center for Preservation and Architectural Design Unit of PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Indonesian Railways) in collaboration with the Central Java Provincial Government. The name "Willem I" carried by this station originates from the nearby fort, Fort Willem I, also known as "Benteng Pendhem" (Buried Fort). It was named Willem I to honor the services of King Willem I of the Netherlands, who reigned at that time. To ensure smooth mobilization of KNIL (Royal Netherlands East Indies Army) troops and logistics, the Nederlandsch-Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij (NIS) was commissioned by the Colonial Government under Governor-General Baron Sloet van de Beele to build a new railway line connecting Semarang to this fort. It turned out that the construction of this line was part of a package with the Semarang NIS – Gundih – Solo Balapan – Lempuyangan railway line. Following NIS's successful construction of the Semarang–Tangoeng line, which was completed on August 10, 1867, NIS began building a new line to Bringin in early 1869, which was then extended to Ambarawa. On May 21, 1873, the Semarang–Vorstenlanden and Kedungjati–Ambarawa lines were completed. The second period involved the construction of the Secang–Ambarawa railway line. Because this railway line passed through mountains with steep and difficult terrain, a rack railway system was built to ensure controlled train speeds. This line connected the strategic military area of the Dutch East Indies in Magelang City with Fort Willem I in Ambarawa, aiming to facilitate the mobility of KNIL troops in the region. On February 1, 1905, this segment was completed. This station became the meeting point for the NIS line, which used a 1,435 mm (standard gauge) track (towards Kedungjati), and the line with a 1,067 mm (cape gauge) track (towards Secang). Since June 1942, the Kedungjati–Willem I and Semarang Tawang–Solo Balapan–Yogyakarta railway lines, which originally used the 1,435 mm gauge, were finally converted to 1,067 mm.
