How to Practice Magic

Focus on what appeals to you. “The hard must become a habit. The habit must become easy. The easy must become beautiful.” — Doug Henning Rehearsal is when you run through your show without stopping as if you were performing it for a live audience. Practice is what you do when you are learning and polishing a routine. I avoid sleights as much as possible, preferring to focus on subtly and presentation. If you must do a slight: • Learning a piece on the violin – one line at a time – take it in segments. • Take it slow, learn it right, do not be tempted to take a short cut. • Practice does not make perfect; perfect practice makes perfect. • Record yourself. • Once you learn the basic technique, watch how your hands lay naturally and modify the technique to match your natural style.
