Psalm 73

Psalm 73 confronts one of the most corrosive forces in our spiritual lives: envy. This ancient song reveals how a worship leader named Asaph nearly abandoned his faith, not because of persecution or intellectual doubt, but because of envy toward the wicked and prosperous. The psalm takes us on a journey from bitter comparison to radical contentment. Asaph confesses that while he preached God's goodness, his feet had almost stumbled as he watched ungodly people thrive while he struggled. He describes their apparent freedom from trouble, their pride, and their complete lack of fear of God. The turning point comes with a single word: until. Until he entered the sanctuary of God, his vision remained clouded. But in God's presence, everything shifted. He saw with an eternal perspective that the wicked stand on slippery ground, destined for destruction, while those reconciled to God inherit eternal riches. The sanctuary for us is Jesus Christ Himself, the true meeting place between God and humanity. When we realize that we have Christ, we have everything. This psalm challenges us to examine what we believe will finally make us content. Is it wealth, health, status, or someone else's life? Or is Jesus our rare jewel of contentment? Envy is a hole in the heart that leaks joy, but Christ alone fills that hole completely and eternally.
