By the beginning of the 20th century, vaccines were already available for many serious diseases prevalent at the time, such as plague, cholera, and tetanus. However, although many of them were successfully treated, doctors still faced new medical challenges. One of these was vitamin deficiency, which resulted in a number of serious and incurable diseases, such as beriberi, rickets, scurvy, and anemia. It was then that a young Polish scientist, Kazimierz Funk, created a new chapter in medicine by discovering vitamins. And although today even the youngest are well-versed in them, the isolation of vitamin B1 is still considered by doctors to be one of the most important stages in the development of modern medicine.
