LEAD: Selby Parish #34 of 74

This is one of Selby’s smallest parishes. It covers an area of just 4.2 square kilometres in the West of the district, close to the border with the City of Leeds. There’s no population figure online for this parish. It does have a population, but it’s extremely small. The only notable features here are a chapel, and this beck which we saw at the end of the Saxton with Scarthingwell episode, named Cock Beck. Here you will come across a medieval pasture which was once a thriving settlement centred on a manor house. It was in the possession of Ilbert de Lacy at the time of the Domesday Survey, but the last known residents here were the Scargills who were known to have developed a park for hunting. These days the village is all but gone, preserved in mounds by a blanket of rich turf, grazed on by a flock of sheep. The chapel still proudly stands where it always has but rather forlornly on its lonesome between the beck and the expanse of fields beyond. A short one this, welcome to LEAD. **** My name is Andy.
