Coming Off the Roof
The wisdom comes down with you. S1E5 - In this episode: Cathy Lee Taylor invites you to notice where your shoulders are right now — not the ache, the position. The slight lift, the forward roll, the readiness underneath everything. That, she names, is the rooftop. A position your body has been holding since you were a girl. Probably for forty years. Maybe longer. This is not a metaphor. This is an episode about a posture your body has been carrying since the moment you understood, very young, that the ground was not safe enough or seeing enough or telling enough truth. You climbed because the world had no category for a girl like you. You stayed up there because nobody ever told you it was okay to come down. The rooftop kept you alive. It kept the women you love alive. It is the reason you saw things other people missed. And your body is finally asking what comes next. What you may have been telling yourself is that you are burnt out. That the body is finally saying no. That the rooftop years were a mistake your nervous system is correcting. Cathy offers a different story. The body is not asking you to leave the rooftop years behind. The body is telling you that the wisdom you earned up there is ready to come down with you. The performance stopped working — not because you failed at it. Because the medicine outgrew the stance. The rooftop was the right altitude for gathering. It is the wrong altitude for transmitting. In the second half of the episode, Cathy leads a slow guided descent — one millimeter at a time. Shoulders. Jaw. Breath. The wisdom doesn't leave with the lowering. The lifted shoulder was just the address the wisdom was using. The intelligence is still there. The pattern recognition is still there. What leaves is the readiness to defend. What stays is what you actually know. There is no homework. The descent was the medicine. The only thing she offers is a single question for the week. This week's practice: Once a day, locate yourself. Not fix yourself. Not improve yourself. Just locate yourself. Ask: am I in the room, or am I on the roof? No judgment if you find yourself back up there. We all go back up. The rooftop is forty years of muscle memory and it will not undo itself in one episode. But every time you notice — every single time — that's the descent happening again. Eventually the rooms become where you live, and the roof becomes a place you can visit when you actually need the altitude.
