Pandit (Dr.) Santosh Kumar Nahar is one of India's distinguished Hindustani classical violinists and a leading exponent of the Mishra Gharana (Bhagalpur Gharana). Known for his melodious tone, technical brilliance, and purity of raga presentation, he has earned recognition as a respected performer, educator, and administrator in the field of Indian classical music. Born in 1965 into a renowned family of traditional musicians, Dr. Nahar received his early musical training from his father and guru, Late Prof. Prahlad Prasad Mishra, an eminent musician and former Director of the Institute of Music, Patna. He further enriched his musical knowledge under the guidance of his uncles, brothers, and violin guru Shri T. M. Patnaik. Dr. Nahar is a Top Grade Violin Artist of Akashvani (All India Radio). His performances are admired for their unique blend of melody, fluency, and fidelity to the traditional grammar of Hindustani ragas. Over the years, he has performed at numerous prestigious music festivals and conferences across India, captivating audiences with his expressive and lyrical violin playing. Apart from his concert career, Dr. Nahar has made significant contributions to the promotion of Indian classical music through broadcasting. He has served as Deputy Director (Programme) and headed the Music Section of Akashvani Delhi, playing an important role in preserving and disseminating India's rich musical heritage. His repertoire includes both classical and semi-classical forms, and he is particularly admired for his presentations of ragas such as Yaman, Charukeshi, Kirwani, Vachaspati, and Basant Mukhari. His performances demonstrate a rare balance between intellectual depth and emotional expression. Throughout his career, Dr. Santosh Kumar Nahar has received several honors and accolades for his artistic excellence and contribution to Indian music. Through his performances, teaching, and administrative work, he continues to inspire students, musicians, and music lovers alike, carrying forward the rich traditions of the Mishra Gharana into the modern era. Raag Kirwani is generally associated with the Harmonic Minor scale and does not belong strictly to any traditional Hindustani Thaat. It was adopted into Hindustani music from the Carnatic system.
