Learning How to Build a Patio and Fire Pit🔥

After tearing down the old chicken coop in the last video, I was finally left with something I hadn't had since moving here — a blank slate. For the past two years, this area of the backyard sat largely untouched while I focused on building gardens and improving other parts of the property. But with plans for this space continuing to take shape, it was finally time to turn a patch of bare dirt into something functional. The project starts with breaking up the soil, raking the area, and working to create a level foundation. Using leftover lumber from the chicken coop demolition, I temporarily laid out the footprint of the patio and experimented with different paver patterns before settling on a design using terracotta and light gray pavers from Lowe's. From there, I brought in multi-purpose sand, spread and compacted the base by hand, and began laying roughly 165 pavers one by one. While working on the patio, I also continued burning the remaining lumber from the chicken coop, finally clearing away the last pieces of the previous project. Once the pavers were installed, I added paver edging around the perimeter, filled the joints with Techniseal polymeric sand, compacted everything into place, and activated the sand with water. To finish the centerpiece of the patio, I constructed a fire pit using landscape adhesive, added decorative gravel around it, and secured the stone with rock glue for a finished look. This project took a total of five days to complete and was easily one of the most challenging DIY projects I've tackled so far. I had no prior experience building a patio, so every step involved learning as I went. There were plenty of mistakes, adjustments, and moments of trial and error, but seeing the finished result made every hour worth it. In this video, you'll see me: 🔥 Build a backyard fire pit 🪵 Burn the remaining chicken coop lumber 🪨 Prepare and level the patio site 📐 Lay out a checkerboard paver pattern 🏖️ Spread and compact a sand base 🧱 Install approximately 165 patio pavers 🔲 Install paver edging around the patio 🌪️ Apply Techniseal polymeric sand 🔨 Compact and settle the pavers 💧 Activate the polymeric sand with water 🪨 Install decorative gravel around the fire pit 🧴 Use rock glue to secure the gravel 🏡 Transform an empty section of the backyard Featured in this video: DIY Backyard Patio Build A complete patio installation from bare ground to finished outdoor living space. Backyard Transformation Project Another major step in reimagining the backyard and creating a space designed for how I actually want to use the property. 👉 Gardener's note: Not every outdoor project starts with plants. Sometimes the biggest transformations begin with creating the structure that future gardens will grow around. This patio may not contain a single flower yet, but it's laying the foundation for everything that's coming next. The patio is complete, the fire pit is finished, and the next phase of this backyard transformation is already underway. In the next video, I'll begin creating a wraparound garden surrounding the patio, bringing plants and color back into the space and continuing the transformation of this backyard. Stay tuned for more garden projects, DIY builds, and backyard transformations. 🌱🔥🏡
