The boy's mother, Monique Medeiros Costa e Silva de Almeida, had her crime reclassified as manslaughter (when there is no intent to kill) and received a judicial pardon. The sentence was handed down by Judge Elizabeth Machado Louro early this morning. The conviction occurred on the 11th day of the trial, the longest in Rio de Janeiro's history. Jairinho was convicted of the crimes of aggravated homicide, torture, and coercion during the course of the proceedings. Henry's stepfather was also ordered to pay R$ 400,000 in compensation for moral damages to the child's father, Leniel Borel. Monique's charge of intentional homicide was dropped by the jury, who determined that there was only negligence on the part of the mother. She was convicted of omission in the face of her son's torture. Following the jury's decision, Henry's mother was sentenced by the judge to 1 year and 4 months of detention for omission.
