🦴 Flexor Carpi Ulnaris (FCU) Tendinopathy – 5 Movement Therapy Program 🧠 What Is FCU Tendinopathy? The Flexor Carpi Ulnaris (FCU) helps with: Wrist flexion Ulnar deviation (moving wrist toward pinky side) Grip strength and stability Carrying and lifting Controlling wrist position during gripping tasks FCU tendinopathy may develop from repetitive gripping, lifting, weight training, climbing, manual labor, sports, keyboard use, or prolonged wrist loading. ⚠️ Common Symptoms: Pain along the pinky side (ulnar side) of the wrist or forearm Pain gripping objects Pain with wrist flexion or lifting Weakness Tenderness over the FCU tendon Pain with carrying or pulling activities ⸻ 🔹 1. Isometric Wrist Flexion Hold (Pain Modulation + Tendon Loading) Goal: Improve tendon tolerance while reducing pain sensitivity. How: Rest forearm on table with palm upward Hold light dumbbell or resistance band Slightly flex wrist and hold position Maintain without movement Dose: Hold 20–45 sec 4–5 repetitions Pain ≤ 3–4/10 ✅ Why: Early tendon loading may improve tolerance and decrease pain sensitivity. ⸻ 🔹 2. Eccentric Wrist Flexion Strengthening Goal: Improve tendon capacity and resilience. How: Forearm supported with palm upward Hold light dumbbell Use opposite hand to assist wrist upward Slowly lower wrist over 3–5 seconds Dose: 2–3 sets 8–15 reps Progress gradually as tolerated. ✅ Why: Eccentric loading is commonly used in tendinopathy rehabilitation. ⸻ 🔹 3. Option A: Therapy Putty Squeezes Squeeze putty slowly Keep wrist neutral or slightly flexed Avoid painful gripping Option B: Hand Gripper Begin with light resistance Maintain neutral wrist position Progress resistance gradually Option C: Farmer Carry (Advanced Progression) Hold dumbbell/kettlebell Maintain neutral wrist Walk while sustaining grip Dose: Putty/Gripper: 2–3 sets × 8–15 reps OR Farmer Carry: 20–60 sec × 2–4 rounds ✅ Why: FCU assists with stabilization during gripping, lifting, and carrying activities.
