I’ve just arrived in Sandakan — one of the largest cities on the Malaysian side of Borneo — and I’m honestly wondering why more people don’t visit. After a 7-hour bus ride from Ranau, I checked into the busiest hostel I’ve seen in two months of travel and went out to explore this coastal city. What I found was a mix of street markets, heritage signs, quiet corners, and signs of a darker history — including the site of the Borneo Death Marches from WWII.
