Stem cells are unspecialized cells that undergo differentiation to form specialized cells. Differentiation potential describes the ability of stem cells to differentiate into specialized cells. Self-renewal refers to the fact that stem cells can divide many times while remaining unspecialized. Stem cells can be classified as totipotent, pluripotent, or multipotent, depending on the number of different cell types they can give rise to.
