Intensive animal farming is ubiquitous in modern livestock production. Through three very different perspectives, this documentary offers a fascinating yet terrifying picture of the current state of the industry. Pig farmer Dirk Nienhaus gives us a rare glimpse behind the scenes of a contemporary fattening farm and shows us how raising farm animals has become an efficient, high-tech process. If anything is clear, it's that industrial livestock farming and cheap meat are two sides of the same coin. Dirk Nienhaus even questions the welfare of his pigs and reflects with remarkable openness on his own role in the system. Meanwhile, Friedrich Mülln views modern livestock farming from the opposite perspective: the founder of the animal protection organization SOKO specializes in exposing the appalling conditions in animal husbandry. The filmmakers accompany him on his nighttime missions, in which he secretly investigates violations of animal welfare laws. Friedrich Mülln demonstrates why he believes the animal farming system has been developed in a completely flawed way. Anja Hradetzky seeks a way to unify animal welfare and livestock farming, and in doing so, she encounters the system's limitations. Her cows live in the fields. The calves grow up with their mothers, and their death comes suddenly, from a gunshot wound in the field. However, questions remain unanswered: What defines a life of animal welfare? Who decides when an animal has lived long enough? But also: Why don't 99 percent of companies use more ethical animal farming methods?
