Do straight men really like women? The question is deliberately provocative, but the point isn't to question the sexual orientation of straight men. The point is something else: what does it mean to desire women if many women are barely listened to, barely respected, barely believed, barely esteemed? In this episode, we'll talk about male homosociality: the way in which, within many patriarchal cultures, men seek recognition, especially in the gaze of other men. Through concepts such as objectification, hegemonic masculinity, the manosphere, and male validation, we'll try to understand why, in certain contexts, women aren't truly the end of male desire, but the means through which men communicate with each other about their own virility. We'll also discuss female friendships, male-mediated respect, group chats, the culture of conquest, and why desiring a woman doesn't automatically mean recognizing her as a subject. This isn't an episode against "all men," but against a cultural structure that teaches many men to use women as validation, trophies, social proof, or a language of belonging to the male group.
