Smutwood peak, Kananaskis, AB - August 17th 2024
Trail Overview: Length: 19.1 km round trip Elevation Gain: 911 meters Duration: 6h14 Difficulty: Hard hike with easy scramble Trailhead: Mount Shark Road, near Mount Engadine Lodge Trail Description: The Smutwood Peak hike is a breathtaking adventure through the heart of Kananaskis Country. This trail offers a mix of serene forest paths, alpine meadows, and easy scrambles, making it a favorite among seasoned hikers. If you don't summit in the clouds like we did, you will be blown away experiencing this gorgeous summit scenery. Starting Point: Begin your journey at the trailhead on Mount Shark Road. The first part of the hike is relatively flat and easy, winding through a lush forest corridor alongside Commonwealth Creek. This section is perfect for warming up and enjoying the peaceful surroundings. The morning we did it was right after a rainy day so the trail was extremely wet and muddy so best to do after a couple dry day! Midway Highlights: About 6 km into the hike, you’ll reach Smuts Pass. Here, the trail becomes steeper and more challenging, but the effort is well worth it. As you ascend, you’ll be treated to stunning views of Mount Birdwood and the surrounding peaks. Don’t forget to take a break and soak in the beauty of the alpine meadows and the crystal-clear lakes. The Ascent: The final push to the summit involves some scrambling and navigating loose rocks. This part can be tricky, especially after rainfall, so make sure you’re equipped with proper hiking boots and poles. The wind at the summit can be strong, but the panoramic views are absolutely spectacular. From the top, you’ll have a 360-degree view of the surrounding mountains, including Mount Smuts and Tent Ridge. Tips for Hikers: Best Time to Hike: June to October Gear: Waterproof boots, hiking poles, and layers for changing weather conditions Wildlife: Keep an eye out for marmots and other wildlife along the trail, we came across some bear scat as well! Conservation Pass: Required for parking in Kananaskis Country Conclusion: The Smutwood Peak hike is a challenging yet rewarding adventure that offers some of the best views in the Canadian Rockies. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or looking for a new challenge, this trail is sure to leave you with unforgettable memories.
