Tabarca is a small island located directly opposite Santa Pola, in the province of Alicante. It's the only inhabited island in the Valencian Community, although it's actually quite tiny—you can walk all the way around it in under an hour. The great thing is that, despite its small size, it has a ton of charm. As soon as you arrive by boat (which is a cool experience in itself), you're greeted by that quintessential Mediterranean atmosphere: whitewashed houses, narrow alleyways, and the smell of the sea and freshly cooked fish. The waters are crystal clear, perfect for snorkeling or simply taking a dip and marveling at the fish you can see from the shore. What's more, Tabarca is a marine reserve, so the seabed is very well preserved. The town is incredibly picturesque, with ancient walls, a beautiful Church of San Pedro, and a peaceful atmosphere that makes you feel like time slows down. And of course, you can't leave without trying caldero tabarquino, the local specialty—a kind of delicious rice dish with fish.
