Dennis Fong - Thresh (pov) vs Entropy @ Red Annihilation - famous Quake event for Ferrari car prize

#Thresh #Dennis #Fong In one of the most famous Quake game battles in history, here the legendary Thresh (Dennis Fong) fights tooth-n-nail in a white knuckle biting match against the Quake Terminator Entropy. WOW! - what a match it was! [Played 6/27/1997 @ 9:52 PM] For some background information on what's happening here and up to this point, I will give some insights from what I remember reading a longer time ago about this match and the events leading up to it. So since this tournament started both Thresh and Entropy (possibly the best players in Quake at that time) played in the elimination matches until only them two remained. Also let's not forget about Reptile either who was still extremely good but I think eventually lost to Thresh when they had to face each other later in the tournament. This Quake Tournament was called Red Annihilation and was held in San Francisco. It was a very big event with possibly the largest crowd in gaming history for a FPS game (First Person Shooter). And of course everybody that could came to see Thresh play on the big projection screen. The Quake game's own creators even came to attend and possibly they were behind the creation of this tournament, which scope was to possibly promote the Quake game and the future of it in this big gaming extravaganza of a show :) Getting to the real meat and potatoes of the Tournament which was it's Grand Prize. The game's lead creator John Carmack put his own red Ferrari as the ultimate prize for the winner. Maybe it was was called Red Annihilation because all the Quake players had to annihilate each other in great fury to win that red Ferrari while putting up a grand show for everybody else to watch hehe Now for some info about this match, as you can imagine the stakes were very high for all players involved because of this fancy car, so they must've been playing for their lives at top skill and effort to pull off a victory. All this makes for a great spectator sport for watching :) So when Thresh and Entropy finally met in the final match you can bet there was a big clash of thunder between them two. Entropy was a great and very good player which beat a lot of opponents to reach the top of gaming Quake stardom, so he was very skilled. When Thresh got to fight him, he took no chances and was extremely defensive, cutting him no slack in the process. If he was going to incur damage, not one further step was taken by him. This is pretty evident while watching the demo. [Warning: stop reading now for match spoiler.] I think Thresh had to think very quickly how to crack this tough egg because for some time into the match nothing was really happening in terms of score. There was some trading damage back and forth, and then Thresh would return to re-stock his gun and ammo supplies and replenish his health and armor. This went on for some time. Then Thresh managed to kill Entropy and then it went downhill from there. I say slowly because Entropy tried his hardest to defend himself and his territory so Thresh wouldn't find him and kill him again thus hurting his score and making him lose the match. So anyway, Thresh was slowly and steadily encroaching onto Entropy's map territory (where he could get his guns, ammo, armor and health) and nick away at his defenses (health and armor) until finally killing him and earning a frag for himself. So it went like this for a pretty long time and Thresh finally won the tournament and the Ferrari car :) The final score itself was a pretty big embarrassment for Entropy I think which finished with a -1. However I don't think this is at all indicative of Entropy's skill which was also very good. In his own defense some arguments were brought on by Entropy himself discussing the spawn system and that Thresh may had gotten lucky with it. This is indeed a valid point since the first death in the game could potentially spell disaster for the player from that point onward as it's very difficult to recover from an inferior score against an opponent who doesn't let you breathe or get the resources necessary to successfully fight back. Big props to Entropy though for getting so far into this tournament and having the final fight with Thresh. I'm sure it wasn't easy at all, phew! What is pretty interesting in this story is that Thresh didn't really like that car in the end. It was red, too attention grabbing, made a truckload of noise and he couldn't really drive it comfortably in his neighborhood because it wasn't really fitting in and had no place to store/ put it/ park it and had fear of it being stolen or parts stolen from it and expensive to fix. So it was like a hassle to own and as the story goes, he eventually sold it for $125,000 (if I remember right). Note that in 1997 that was big money, the equivalent of around $250,000 now (as I write this). So this is my recollection of the story about this tournament and Thresh's new car which he won. May you all enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed telling it :)
