NIGER CELEBRATION

(31 Dec 1959) Named after the River Niger, the Republic of Niger became a member State of the French Community just a year ago. These are background pictures, taken on the eve of the celebration of the anniversary, showing local industries and so on. There was a parade, and the chiefs headed the procession in Niamey, the capital. The Camel Corps gave a touch of discipline, and the horsemen looked rather like the Crusaders did, nearly a thousand years ago. It was a national occasion, and the people of the young Republic were determined to stage a show that would cater for all tastes.
