Arkona was one of the most important cultural and religious centers of the Polabian Slavs, known for the cult of the god Świętovit. The Danes and other Christian nations carried out constant campaigns to Christianize pagan areas. In the case of Rügen, the main aggressors were the Danes. King Valdemar I of Denmark, also known as Valdemar the Great, pursued a policy of expansion of his kingdom, including the Christianization of nearby pagan tribes. In 1168, together with his bishop Absalon, who was equally committed to the cause of Christianization, Valdemar I decided to attack Arkona. The decision to attack was not accidental. Arkona was not only a religious, but also a political center of Slavic resistance to Christianity and Danish domination.
