Nalanda University, located in the Nalanda district of the Indian state of Bihar, is considered the world's oldest and most renowned residential university. It was the largest center of education not only in India but throughout Asia. Destruction The university was destroyed and the library set on fire during the invasion of Bakhtiyar Khilji around 1193 AD. UNESCO In 2016, the ancient ruins of Nalanda University were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. New Nalanda University The Government of India established the New Nalanda University in 2010 to carry forward the legacy of ancient Nalanda, where international studies are still conducted today.
