How to Avoid Cultural Appropriation When Practicing Restorative Justice: Talking Circles

This is a very brief summary of the use of talking circles in public institutions as part of “Restorative Justice,” and how to make these practices culturally sensitive. This is my personal view, as an indigenous person, and represents my values and what has been passed down to me. I do not represent all indigenous people. However, as a social worker it is my responsibility to advocate for culturally sensitive practices. Things not mentioned in the video: Traditional circles are lead by an Elder, Chief, Medicine Man/Woman etc. Also, the circle is concluded with a prayer. Participants may speak in their indigenous tongue, or choose not to. Also, in some Alaskan Native traditions, the circle is followed by a potlatch (or potluck). Please let me know in the comments if you have any questions! I would love to hear from other indigenous people who have more insight. Thank you, quyanaasinaq
