Demolition of a five-story building on Öğretmenler Street in the Ambarlı neighborhood of Avcılar began after it was evacuated as part of the urban renewal project. Just as the demolition company's construction equipment was starting work, the building collapsed with a loud crash. The operator of the equipment involved in the demolition effort narrowly escaped being trapped under the concrete blocks. Security camera footage from a nearby business shows the dust cloud created by the collapse. ADJACENT BUILDING DAMAGED DURING DEMOLITION The walls of the second-floor apartment and the ground-floor business in the adjacent apartment building were damaged during the demolition. A mother and daughter, whose apartment was damaged, protested the demolition crews. Workers spent considerable time trying to calm the two women. While demolition work was underway, police and teams from the Avcılar Municipality Urban Planning and Zoning Department inspected the collapsed building. The teams inspected the foundation of the adjacent building and determined that there was no risk to the building. "90 PERCENT OF THE BUILDINGS IN AVCILAR ARE ROTTEN" Shopkeeper Can Yelegen said, "If an earthquake were to occur in Avcılar, there would be many damaged buildings." Beşir Zengin, a real estate consultant in Avcılar, said, "The state has provided resources to our municipality. Citizens should use these resources to their fullest. 90 percent of the buildings in Avcılar are rotten, and they are costing people's lives. A piece of the roof fell from the top of the building, and a woman died. People want to renovate these buildings. The residents of the building should unite and have their buildings demolished and a new one built. Some people are opposing them. Just like the building where the woman who died two days ago died, they say, 'Our buildings are strong, we don't want them demolished.' This is how it costs people's lives. These demolitionists are trying to tear down this building you see, without causing any damage, but because the buildings are rotten, they are collapsing on their own." Zengin said, "Citizens need to personally address these issues and have these buildings demolished. Life safety and human life are more important than anything else."
