A week ago, forecasters circled a single dark region rotating onto the face of the Sun and warned that it was dangerous. Six days later it has become the largest sunspot on the entire star, twisted into the rare magnetic configuration that produces the most violent flares our Sun can make. Then its smaller neighbor fired first, launching an X-class flare and a full-halo cloud of plasma now racing across ninety-three million miles of space toward Earth, timed to arrive over the Fourth of July weekend. Forecasters have already issued a geomagnetic storm watch, and the aurora could be pushed as far south as New York. But the region we were actually warned about, the true giant, has not fired yet. It is still turned toward us, still fully loaded, and rotating into the exact position from which its next shot would be aimed straight at Earth.
