On this day, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi recommended the imposition of Emergency under Article 352 of the Constitution, which was approved by then President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed. The Emergency remained in force for 21 months, from June 1975 to March 1977, and led to major political and social changes across the country. During this period, elections were suspended, civil liberties were curtailed, and strict press censorship was enforced. Several prominent opposition leaders, including Atal Bihari Vajpayee, L.K. Advani, and Jayaprakash Narayan, were arrested and jailed. Newspapers were placed under censorship, with government-appointed officers controlling publication approvals.
