And here’s a story very few know: In 1815, during British rule in Kandy, the Sacred Tooth Relic — Sri Lanka’s most revered Buddhist object — was secretly relocated for protection. It was hidden in Kotmale during a period of unrest. And when the time came to return it to Kandy, it didn’t go straight to the Temple of the Tooth. For one sacred night, the relic rested right here at Hindagala Temple. A key figure in this operation was John D’Oyly, a British civil servant fluent in Sinhala, who worked closely with Buddhist monks, the king’s men, and local leaders. He played a quiet but crucial role in ensuring the relic’s safety. Later, the relic was ceremoniously moved to the Temple of the Tooth, where it remains today — but its secret overnight stay here adds a profound spiritual weight to Hindagala. Though not crowded with visitors, this temple continues to serve the community. Monks reside here, devotees come to offer flowers and light lamps.
