Anyone who keeps relapsing despite antibiotics, retinoids or expensive skincare routines is only treating the symptom. The physiological cause - the unstable system - remains. Creams usually work only on the surface. The water evaporates, leaving behind lipids that form a film. This smooths things briefly, but corrects neither circulation nor lymph flow. Real skin health requires correcting three fundamental mechanisms that are disrupted by mouth breathing and a lack of muscle tone. 1. Missing NO (Nitric Oxide) blocks microcirculation The nose is far more than an air channel; it acts as a biochemical lab. Nitric oxide (NO) is produced continuously in the sinuses. This signaling molecule relaxes the vascular musculature (vasodilation) and widens the vessels. The effect: With nasal breathing, NO enters the system and improves microcirculation throughout the body, including the skin. The problem: With mouth breathing, this NO is missing. The vessels narrow, circulation drops. Less oxygen and fewer nutrients reach the skin cells, and immune defense against bacteria weakens. 2. The "Sleep-Skin Axis": Cortisol and sebum production Mouth breathing at night frequently leads to collapse of the upper airway and to snoring. This fragments sleep and triggers low-grade physiological stress. The body activates the HPA axis (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis), which raises cortisol production. Cortisol has two fatal effects on the complexion: It directly stimulates the sebaceous glands, leading to oilier skin. It weakens the skin barrier and promotes water loss. The result: an ideal breeding ground for bacteria and chronic inflammation. 3. Lymph Congestion: When the "waste disposal" goes on strike This is the most underestimated factor. Muscles don't just serve movement - they act as local pumps for the lymphatic system. The function: With every contraction and relaxation, the muscle presses on lymph vessels and blood vessels. Nutrients flow in, metabolic waste (cell debris, inflammatory substances) is carried away. The dysfunction: Mouth breathing physiologically goes hand in hand with slack, inactive facial muscles (open mouth, dropped jaw). Without muscle tone, the pump effect is missing. The lymph stagnates. Inflammatory substances remain in the tissue, and the face looks puffy and doughy. To clear the skin long-term, the system has to be stabilized. Actively boost nitric oxide (NO) Studies with NO creams show markedly clearer skin after 4 weeks. But this effect can be produced systemically and for free: Humming: Humming during nasal exhalation sets the sinuses vibrating. This measurably increases NO production 15-fold. Ideal before bed. Shear stress through movement: 20-40 minutes of brisk walking creates shear stress in the blood vessels, which prompts the endothelium to produce NO. Nitrate pathway: Vegetables like arugula, spinach and beetroot supply nitrate, which is converted to NO in the body. Warning: Antibacterial mouthwashes can disrupt this process. Mouth-taping carries risks and trains no muscle. It's a passive crutch. The goal has to be active muscle tone that keeps the mouth closed even during sleep. Causal training (e.g. FaceFormer therapy) automates the triad of nasal breathing, tongue resting posture and lip closure. This tone permanently activates the lymph pump. Nutrition as an inflammation brake Control insulin: High-glycemic-index foods (sugar, white flour) drive insulin up, which in turn stimulates the sebaceous glands. Whole grains and legumes are the better choice. Test cutting dairy: Dairy products can trigger acne. A 4-week elimination often brings clarity. Omega-3: Acts as a systemic anti-inflammatory (fish, flaxseed oil, walnuts). Bottom line: Clearer skin is a question of the physiological foundation. Switching from mouth to nasal breathing and reactivating the facial muscles restores the body's own "waste disposal" and nutrient supply. #Skin #Acne #ClearSkin #NasalBreathing #NitricOxide #FaceFormer #Lymph #Health
