Why is celibacy so important in the practice of the Dhamma?

On what base do we decide renounce something that is such a big part of most people's lives? How is our attachment to sexuality (as well as other things) conditioned by the views and the way of seeing of the society in which we live, and how can we put this into question so as to see things just as they are?
