Chris Obore Arrested | Corruption Charges

Chris Obore is a Ugandan journalist and public communications professional who serves as the Director of Communications and Public Affairs at the Parliament of Uganda. Over the years, he has been one of the institution's most visible spokespersons, frequently addressing the media on parliamentary affairs, government policy, and public controversies. Before joining Parliament, Obore built a career in journalism and public affairs, becoming a well-known figure in Uganda's media landscape. On July 2, 2026, Obore was arrested by Uganda's Inspectorate of Government (IGG) alongside several other senior Parliament officials as part of a major anti-corruption investigation. According to the IGG, the arrests followed investigations into the alleged misappropriation of public funds involving Parliament and the Uganda Parliamentary Cooperative Savings and Credit Society (SACCO). The officials were expected to appear before the Anti-Corruption Court to answer multiple charges, including alleged embezzlement, money laundering, and causing financial loss. Authorities have stated that the investigation involves tens of billions of Ugandan shillings in allegedly misappropriated funds. Court documents cited by multiple media outlets allege that the accused individuals participated in transactions involving public funds between 2023 and 2026. Prosecutors contend that some of the funds represented proceeds of crime and have brought charges under Uganda's Anti-Corruption Act and Anti-Money Laundering Act. The prosecution alleges that several officials jointly participated in financial transactions that are now the subject of criminal proceedings. Following their appearance before the Anti-Corruption Court, Obore and several co-accused officials were remanded to prison pending further court proceedings. The court is expected to determine the merits of the prosecution's case as the legal process continues. At this stage, the allegations remain before the court and have not been proven. Under the principle of due process, all accused persons are presumed innocent unless and until found guilty by a competent court. The arrests have attracted widespread public attention because they involve senior officials within Uganda's Parliament, an institution that has faced increased scrutiny in recent years over public spending and accountability. Previous public debates and investigations into parliamentary expenditure had already placed Parliament's financial management under intense public and political examination. As Director of Communications and Public Affairs, Obore had previously defended Parliament against various corruption allegations made in earlier years, maintaining that accusations against the institution should be supported by evidence and investigated through the appropriate legal processes. His own arrest has therefore drawn significant public interest given his prominent role as Parliament's chief spokesperson.
