Today you will learn what I rate as one of the GREATEST ever campfire guitar singalong songs EVER. And it is also a perennial favourite in karaoke lounges all around the world. This is not a clickbait statement, this song is the REAL DEAL as everyone loves to sing along to this tune. When the song was first released back in 1964 there was concern that it was too long and too slow for commercial radio to promote and play it. Well, that fear was quickly alleviated in part due to the famous opening line where the silky smooth voice of Bill Medley just draws the listener into the song. My favourite line in the song is “it makes me just feel like cryin’, cause baby, something beautiful dyin” which sums up the sentiment of the song perfectly, and is a crescendo line in the song. The song understandably was a huge hit from the get go, charting #1 in the US and Canada. It has stood the test of time and has made numerous “lists” of great songs, notably #34 of the Rolling Stones Greatest Songs of All Time. Just think about that for a minute. Thousands of songs are released every years, with maybe a hundred or more of these being considered "hits". And this song has been rated in the top 50 songs of all time. What an achievement!! It also features high on the most credentialed of song lists, the Campfire Guitar Hero list of the greatest campfire singalong songs of all time.
