The "Carolina Reaper," which still holds its throne in 2020, is the hottest pepper in the world, according to the Guinness Book of World Records! With a Scoville hotness of 2,200,300 units (SHU) on the Scoville scale, it was awarded the title of world's hottest pepper in November 2013, a title it still holds. The Trinidad Scorpion Butch T pepper is a Capsicum chinense variety, one of the world's most magnificent peppers. It broke the world record in 2011, but lost its throne to the Carolina Reaper in 2013. Hot pepper grower and sauce maker Butch Taylor obtained seeds of the Trinidad Scorpion variety in a 2004 exchange. When Butch Taylor cultivated the seeds from the exchange, he noticed that the plants produced more regular-shaped fruits and were more productive than other varieties. He continued growing the seeds from this plant and shared them with many people. With a Scoville hotness rating of 1,463,700 units (SHU) on the Scoville scale, it dethroned the Bhut Jolokia as the world's hottest pepper in 2011, a title it held from 2011 to 2013. In November 2013, it lost its crown to the Carolina Reaper with a SHU rating of 1,569,300 units (SHU). Currently, according to 2016 data, the Carolina Reaper is the fifth hottest pepper known in the world, after the Moruga Trinidad Scorpion, the 7 Pod Douglah, and the Primo.
