Chimney Rock is a 315 foot ( 2,280 ft. sea level) granite monolith less than 45 minutes east of Asheville, NC. The state park - Chimney Rock State Park is a popular tourist destination for many traveling in the area. This 8,014 acre state park towers over the city of Chimney Rock & Lake Lure. And provides incredible views of Lake Lure and the mountains surrounding the area. The park offers a good number of trails to like Devil's Head ( a balancing rock) and to a 404 foot waterfall - Hickory Nut Falls! Hickory Nut Falls is the second highest waterfall east of the Mississippi River. In 1902 , Dr. Lucius B. Morse purchased 64 acres at Chimney Rock Mountain which included the chimney and cliffs. Mr. Morse and family owned a operated Chimney Rock Park from 1902 to 2007. During this time the family brought additional tracts of lands - increasing the park size to 996 acres. In 2007 - the Morse family sold the park to the State of North Carolina . Today it's a State Park but does cost to enter: The cost is $17 for adults and $8 for ages 5-15 , and free for 4 years old and younger. Here are some of the attractions of the park: . Chimney Rock .
