Southwest Detroit Hoods: Mexicantown 5K.

Not all of Detroit looks like the apocalypse. Mexicantown is the last remaining original ethnic neighborhood in the city. Signage in the Spanish language is used up and down Vernor Highway, mixed in with street art. The neighborhood still suffers from high crime and poverty however. Once we get away from Mexicantown, we go deep into some of Detroit's hoods. It's a part of the city that might fit the description that you had in mind of Detroit, with vacant lots and abandoned buildings galore.
