[SCALAE] “Traces, Traces, Fragments…of Architecture” Capsule: Earth Houses – Raw Rooms, 43 Social Housing Units in Platja d’en Bossa, Ibiza · Peris + Toral Arquitectes An explanation, by José Manuel Toral, of the project and construction of 43 social housing units, “Earth Houses,” in Platja d’en Bossa, Ibiza, for IBAVI, the Balearic Housing Institute. The account addresses the comfort parameters in housing specifically for the Balearic Islands and how these parameters become unique in the cardinal orientation, the materials and construction systems, and, especially, the methods and technologies of insulation and climate control based on natural, non-mechanical elements. As a result of the eco-environmental parameters considered in the design and construction, and thanks to the creative vision of Marta Peris and José Manuel Toral, the result is a series of unconventional dwellings where traditional real estate criteria based on surface area dissolve into a continuous spatial conception. The sequence of rooms is presented as a fluid, yet compartmentalized, space, reminiscent of a cinematic sequence or an oriental palace. This is all within a habitable system where all service and served spaces are identical in their dimensions: 3 x 4 meters.
