Should I be concerned about water or condensation in the muffler? As mentioned above, condensation doesn't pose any danger to the car. Perhaps the only thing that can be damaged, and will certainly be damaged over time, is the muffler itself, which will simply rust through to holes within a few years. That's the first point. The second point is that if too much water accumulates in the muffler in winter, it can freeze and completely block the exhaust, making starting the car simply impossible. Now let's run through some tips and tricks. Let's start with the basics. So, you've been driving in the winter, arrived at your destination, and before turning off the engine, rev it up a bit. Regularly following this tactic will likely prevent a frozen muffler. Also, a frozen muffler can be prevented by periodic long trips, during which any moisture accumulated in the exhaust simply evaporates. This, by the way, is especially relevant advice for those whose driving trips are typically short. Also, when parking, try parking the car at a slight incline so that the exhaust is lower than the front of the car. This will allow the condensation to drain more easily. Some people recommend drilling a hole in the bottom of the muffler to allow condensation to drain. In our humble opinion, this is a highly questionable option. It's unclear which will ruin the muffler faster—the presence of condensation or the drilled hole.
